ROCKLEA, Little Gruinard

Self-Catering, Holiday Home
2024 Waiting List

Holiday Home

Little Gruinard is four miles north of Laide and ROCKLEA, which is a log house, stands in its own grounds of around five acres above the shoreline of Gruinard Bay. There is direct and private access to the beach.

At the seaward end of this self-catering house there is a spacious living area which combines kitchen and dining facilities along with the sitting room. There are three bedrooms to accommodate five adults, a fully equipped bathroom and a separate W.C.

Visitors to the house enthuse about the nearness to nature and wildlife that it offers and binoculars are essential if the bird life, red and roe deer, pine marten, seals and, if you are lucky and patient, otters and possibly even a badger are to be enjoyed to the full from the sitting room window.

The house benefits from it’s own short drive and has immediate and easy access from the North Coast 500 (NC500) route.

Rocklea has been awarded 4 stars along with the Assisted Wheelchair Access for guests. It also benefits from the highland community broadband network and there is a mobile mast in the near vicinity.

Facilities

The house is fully insulated and heated on the Scottish Hydro Electric Total Control System and the water is heated by immersion heater.

The sitting room has an open fire and in addition to a digital television, a video and DVD player, there is a radio within a mini stereo system. When not experiencing bad weather our WIFI system allows full streaming from online services (Netflix, Youtube etc).

The bedrooms comprise one double, one twin and one single room. All the beds are provided with electric blankets.

The bathroom is fully equipped and has an overbath shower whilst the W.C. has a wash hand basin and a shaver point.

The kitchen equipment includes an electric cooker, a microwave oven, a fridge/freezer, a dish washer, an automatic washing machine and a tumble drier.

Garden furniture is provided and can be used at your own risk (unsanitised).

There is a private walkway giving direct access to the beach although it should be noted that it is not suitable for disabled or infirm visitors.

Pets (maximum x 2 dogs) are welcome, we advise being kept on a lead in the garden – there are sheep in neibouring fields and dear trot through the garden most days.

Wood and coal are available from the Farm & Garden store in Gairloch, it is not supplied.

Out and About

Scenery, wildlife, beaches, walks, fishing: north to Ullapool, Achiltibuie and Sutherland: south to Inverewe Garden, Gairloch, Loch Maree, Torridon and Skye.

The Wester Ross scenery is unique in Britain. Rugged mountains, beautiful inland lochs and sparkling rivers, awesome sea lochs and breathtaking seascapes – all so different and the pattern of life such a contrast with elsewhere that you feel abroad and yet you’re at home. Red deer, Roe deer, feral goats, pine marten, otters and recently a badger, golden eagles, sea eagles and many other varied and interesting bird species.

Beautiful sandy beaches abound not least on Rocklea’s door step – down our private walkway – Gruinard Bay but also in the immediate area at Mellon Udrigle and at Slaggan. All are unspoilt and sparsely populated even in high summer. Sea, loch and river fishing, pony trekking, sailing and walks to suit every temperament from a gentle stroll to the odd Munro are all available in the area. And for golf enthusiasts there is a well tended 9 hole course at Gairloch. En route to Gairloch at Poolewe is Inverewe Garden owned and managed by The National Trust for Scotland and a popular attraction for visitors.

For general touring, going south through Gairloch to Loch Maree – with the magnificent mountain, Slioch , on the opposite bank – Kinlochewe, Torridon, Shieldaig, Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye are all an easy day’s journey: or going north to Ullapool, Achiltibuie and the Summer Isles and on up the Sutherland coast can also be readily covered within a day. Wonderful and at times spectacular scenery wherever you go. The weather – when the sun shines you ask yourself how anyone could possibly choose the Mediterranean or the Canaries. But we have to be honest a holiday in Wester Ross can be wet so rainwear is essential.
